Grus, the Crane

Gru

Gruis

Sky Chart and Artist Rendering of Grus

Origin:
Separated from Piscis Austrinus by Johann Bayer and drawn first in his Uranometria in 1603.  In more modern times, the Crane has also been associated with a flamingo but that association has never caught on and is not generally recognized.

Information:
Grus lies just below Piscis Austrinus and is easy to find by locating the bright star Fomalhaut in Piscis Austrinus and then scanning to the south.  Grus culminates at 9 pm late in October.  Grus is very low on the horizon for observers north of 30° N lat.
