Letters from Dr. Gose

Christmas Season 1997

Dear Heidelbergers,
That my Christmas letter is late is mostly intentional. It is mostly due to one of my life’s full circle experiences. This will probably make you feel old, maybe nostalgic. Creedance has come home from the Heidelberg program for Christmas! It’s a joy to have her home. She was in the summer program in Florence; we met her in London for a month; the between term break in HD is now a full month, so unlike when you were there, most students go home for the long holiday. It’s delightful to now hear of her own independent experiences in a place that has meant so much to us. (But, no, the others still aren’t the true Heidelbergers.) (Janice and I are also back from my first sabbatical, a semester back at Stanford doing research on “curriculum animation.”) So, why is the letter late? I have this fond wish that you will write some sort of note to Creedance in Heidelberg, by telling you this now you can add it into your New Year’s resolutions, and she will be back there by the time you can send the letter. The address has changed slightly. Pepperdine University, Graimbergweg 10, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany. The “69117” is probably testimony to an increase in technological efficiency, “Germany” a testimony to an increase in democratization. It’s doubtful that your old rooms show any similar signs of such progress, perhaps a continuing testimony to timelessness. Perhaps not. If you do write her, you could tell her old tales you didn’t think we knew, tell her how fast the last 12 years have gone, give her advice on places not to miss or any other advice you’d give her now that you have presumably all passed the thirty mark. Ah, I knew you in your youth...

In the new year I will reapply myself to my Web page. The biggest frustration is that it is not yet possible for you to post your own messages. When that finally becomes a reality I think we will be cooking. Meanwhile, besides the family pictures on our page that need to be updated with this year’s Christmas photos, I do think that so many of you are parents now that my article on “games kids play on parents” has some wisdom, and that since most of you will not see many movies for the next few years, you might check out my film lists for video rental recommendations. The (too long) address: http://www.pepperdine.edu/seaver/hute/faculty/gose/Gose.htm
Check it out; I love to see the clicker on visits going up one by one...

Meanwhile everyone seems to be doing well. Carlos hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar yet, but continues to do well in the film and commercial business, but I forgot to ask if he was still producing the professional wrestling he’d added as a side line. Kim and Dana are still in Bremerton with Kim teaching fifth grade. Janet (and Garry and Annie) are expecting a second child and are now in Valdosta Georgia where Garry is a professor. Shannon, Sheldon, and Brady were joined by Ian Michael September 10. Ian checked in at a healthy 9 pounds 13 ounces on September 10th. Shannon had a scare with Brady and a seizure, but he is doing well. Shannon and Sheldon are still enjoying Panama. Jon, Camille and Madeline are expecting! Jon’s still working as a General Counsel. Midori and Bill and Christopher have added Brandon to the family, January 17th, and have also moved into a new home. Kathy Bristow is somehow living in three different States (I’m talking U.S. States here, not states of consciousness) at the same time. Kim Lambert tried to explain this to me, but I didn’t fully grasp the concept. Tanja has been teaching full time at Pepperdine as a Visiting Professor in Economics. I still tend to think each and everyone of you should be working here by now...Zoila and David are in a new home in Pomona and Matthew is nearly four already. Russ, Becky, and Kayla have added Cameron David to the family this past August 27th, Cameron checking in at a healthy 8 pounds seven ounces. They’ve also had a successful company merger. Char passed her Board as an N.P. and is an RN at Beth Israel, still in MA. Audrey is still in Sacramento. Caroline (and Jeff and Cole and Jordan) are in a new home in Moorpark, Caroline still with Sage and Discovery Toys. Debbie (and Tracy and Alexa and Kylie) are doing well, still in Oceanside. Monica and Jesus are pg! Janille (and John) sent me a note that she was having a grand time with her two sons, Joshua and Christopher. Christopher was born July 24th. Shayne is thriving as an attorney. Carolyn finished her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Colorado and has taken a job in Boulder. Jeff (and Shelley) have had a baby girl, Savannah Georgia! Tom is engaged to Catherine Pruett! and has moved to San Antonio with Southwestern Bell. Brett continues to become a conglomerate and has moved to a new place still in Irvine. Danielle and John continue to be quite busy with Camille, Timothy, and Bennett. Cristina is now with National Pediatrics. Kevin and Michelle have come home from Austria and in March will move to Wheaton, Illinois, still with TEAM. Mark (and Michelle and Miles) celebrated Mark’s finishing his M.B.A. at Santa Clara. Stephanie (and Kevin and Connor) were joined by Drew last December, who checked in just in time for the tax deduction, December 30th. They’ve also moved to Wellesley, Massachusetts. Erin continues to work at the University of Chicago (and to be the inspiration for the Global Village now on my Web Site). Cindy and Arno greeted Anika on November 20th! Debbie tells me that Sarah has a new job in Connecticut that she loves. Brian and Ronda are expecting in April. Haven’t heard anything lately about Jeanne Kroy. I haven’t heard from Connie, Rick, and Rachel this year yet, probably Connie is still recovering from finishing her degree and giving birth in the same month last year? Kim and Scott and Luke and Micah greeted Isaac Travis on August 27th. Patrick continues to work on his Ph.D. at USC, and he sent me a book of his poetry this year. Michaelann and Curtis and Brock and Thomas and Augustine and Marie were due to add to the family December 21st, but I haven’t yet been able to get confirmation. Dena (and Carina) continue to enjoy Mom working as a Science Teacher in Riverside. Dane continues to change cars and residences, but not countries, and reports he is well in Germany. Paige and Steve are still in Canton, Ohio. Tim has been seen in some television programs, but I haven’t caught him yet, anyone have videos? Got together with Steve in San Francisco for lunch. He’s working there with an Educational Consulting Firm. There’s a new address for Jon Rankin in the Alumni directory. Jon, send us a cassette with at least one of your Fiddler on the Roof song? Kowanda and Ron sent me a picture of Derek, Doug, and Karina that I hope to have on my Web page soon! Don and Kim also sent pictures of their kids, Jordan and the twins, Corinne and Elise. I can hardly wait to take all these grandkids back to Heidelberg. Despite how hard we had heard Don was working at being a doctor, Don reports (not in these words) that he has taken up the true symbol of doctorhood--Golf. He also says he sang a solo in a Christmas musical. I hope he lived up to the standards I set in HD with “Mercedes Benz.” Diana blessed us with baby Austin in August. Jeff (Scriv) was spotted in Santa Monica (phone home, Jeff). Cara reports that Michael finished his Pepperdine M.B.A. I think Jan is working as an attorney in Seattle. It’s hard to get ahold of Kristy now that she and Brad have Toby, but she does promise me tickets to the new Phoenix baseball games. It continues to be a joy to work with Karin here in the Humanities Division. I hear Brad and Margaret and Hannah continue to thrive in Colorado. Julie has moved to Las Vegas and rumor has it is making a career move. Paul and Konni and Zachary have sent Paul’s father and mother to be the resident faculty family in Heidelberg. Kim and Kevin are expecting in early June. They’ve moved to a new place on Naples Island in Long Beach, Kim finished her Masters at Claremont and is still teaching sixth grade in Norwalk. Carrie and Andy and Jenna and Jessica are expecting in February, Carrie continues to enjoy teaching at the Huntington Beach adult school. David and Gayle and Alyssa and Christopher are probably going to come back from China in the Fall of ‘98 for seminary work. Eric and Jennifer sent me a delightful picture of Marc in a Santa hat (and an infectious smile). Jen is working on her doctorate at Rutgers and Eric continues to help AT&T stay solvent. I talked a few days ago with Todd. He and Kimberly and Emily and Daniel have recently moved to “the country” in Kentucky. Todd is still with Hawley Products. I have heard a rumor that Tim and Nicole are pg! They have moved to Arlington, Virginia. I always worry that I will have overlooked someone; having just turned 51 last week, I will warn you that short term memory does not get better with age; and I just got my first pair of “progressive” lenses. I liked the idea of being a progressive educator, but I’m not sure I like that term applied to my vision...Always looking for perspective, I will point out, once again, that Creedance is now the age you were in Heidelberg, you are now the age Janice was, and I was “only” a little older at 38. Time flies when you are having fun. Can hardly wait to see what Monica and Jon have in store for us for the 20 year reunion in 2006!

Wishing you God’s blessing in the New Year!
michael, Janice and Creedance
