Letters from Dr. Gose

1990

November 1990 We're HD Aunts and Uncles! Michaelann (and Curtis) are the proud parents of Brock Joseph born 10/23/90! So, Happy Thanksgiving! I was too excited to wait until Pearl Harbor Day to send out the Christmas letter and new directory. Word also has it that Kowanda is "pg" and I'm not talking "parental guidance" and movie classifications. It also seems timely to note that by my calculations twenty-two of our number have married now (and also, by my calculation about that same number have taught in one capacity or another). I am confident that both of these categories will continue to grow. I should also let you know that I am reconsidering my time projections. I had thought that I could take your children to Year In Europe the year I turn 65, 2012. That would mean, however, that you all need to have babies in 1993. With 1991 right around the corner I realize that I may have to delay my retirement a couple of years. So it gose. Word still has it that despite 20 hours of labor Michaelann and Curtis should be good for children on a regular basis and if they have twins down the line maybe I can recruit for Europe around their applications?

Also, you will note the attached program for our 1996 reunion. I had hoped to schedule it on the weekend of Good Friday so that teachers (and parents) wouldn't have to miss school. But Easter falls on April 7, 1996, and the Year In Europe students will still be in the Moorehaus. So, we'll go the weekend of April 19-21. The Lamberts have already put away a CD in planning ahead for that event. All indications are that Russ and Becky will own a private jet by then, but I think we should plan ahead anyway. The "schedule" of events is tentative and suggestive. Any ideas you have for what all should be included in the Reunion Weekend are still solicited. We are almost half way there! Time flies when you are having fun.

With regard to our directory I'll admit it will probably be easier when you all reach your thirties and presumably more stability so that you don't move every six months. How does the post office keep up with you all? Are you dodging notices of college loans that are now due? Anyway I think the directory is mostly accurate and that my recollection of what people are doing is somewhat truthful.

Connie and Rick are in La Mesa, California, the San Diego area. Connie is working for the Red Cross (and Rick is minister of the congregation where I once sponsored, as a teen, "The Young Men's Lectureship." Carlos is still making movies. Will he invite us all to his first Academy Award? Kimmy Jo is teaching at Ambler Elementary. Janille is working at the Trade Center in Seattle (back from her many escapades in Europe). I understand Caroline Bennett is engaged to Jeff Dewey with a June wedding date. Jonathan and Camille are in the Bay Area with Jonathan going to Hastings Law School. Shannon is under the covers, excuse me, under cover, literally, and we should not try to track her down until after Christmas.

Midori is working with Pepperdine and the School of Business and Management. Kathy Bristow is working and applying to graduate schools in International Studies. Kim Cabe is still with Campus Crusade at Cal Poly (and last letter mentioned she was the only unmarried member of her team--it doesn't have to be Kim, by the way, but I have predicted one more marriage between our Heidelbergers). Tanja has passed her qualifying exams towards her Ph.D. in Economics at UC Santa Barbara. Scott is working in Special Education in Sacramento. Zoila is still working with a television station. Russ, after a brief hiatus, is back as C.E.O. with his family business and Becky continues to run her own company. They are both looking into M.B.A. programs. Char is in nursing school. Janice and Creedance saw Shayne down at Hughes and report that he is in his third year of Law School here at Pepperdine. Carolyn has finished her Masters degree and is working. I've heard Jeff Gillett is in Law School but have not found a curent address or phone number for him. I talked with Tom by phone this year and presume he is still in Nevada although that phone number is no longer good. Brett is working in La Guna Beach. For awhile there was the threat that Brett and Steve were going to room together, but the Coastal Commission stepped in and said it would be bad for the environment. Danielle and John are in Concord"and Danielle is teaching Grades 1-2. Cristina has joined the teaching ranks working, among other jobs, at a pre-school. Kevin and Michelle are in Santa Barbara still. Mark wrote me in August to tell me he was reading the letter that I sent out last Christmas and to complain he wasn't in Real Estate, but in Financial Planning, but it was true he still needed a date ... Be sure to write Erin at the Moorehaus. I doubt she will be there much longer as I think she has Graduate School on her mind-and we want her to nail down the Moorehaus for our Reunion before she leaves. Cindy has been teaching in Special Education. Audrey is reportedly still in Simi Valley. Sarah hasn't yet come back to California and commutes from her Connecticut home to New York (Columbia). Brian is in Ecuador (mentioned a special lady in a postcard, but it might have been his mother to whom he w'as-referring). Be sure to send Sweetness a Christmas cards since he is so far away. If you've heard even a rumor about Jeanne, I'd like to hear about it. It's been some time since I've heard anything. I still can't remember whether Dane is working at Tandy, Tandem, Tanden, but he does assure me that he is gainfully employed. Patrick went to Guatemala to work on his Spanish. Janet is in Germany working with Share and with the military school. Kelley has reportedly moved to Agoura Hills. Dena married Jeff Bradford. (and we were there and they said their vows on a ship). Maz has been acting-he was doing great until I sent his casting agent a video of his "rap" performance from Heidelberg--remember, the one where he couldn't remember his lines? Paige has finished a Master's degree at Kent State and is considering Law School. Steve Nicks decided not to take my advice and didn't buy a BMW, says he's thinking about returning to graduate school and doesn't want long term debt (I suppose that means he's going into Business). This is Kristy's second year as Creedance's teacher, talk about pressure. I cannot confirm there is any relationship between Sting moving to Malibu and Kristy staying in Malibu to teach. Was Jon Rankin really with us in Heidelberg? Kowanda (and Ron) have moved to Oregon (still with State Farm) and are building a house (and as reported above, are lipg". Don (and Kimberly) are about finished with Med School and just in time because, Don, I've been having this pain in my shoulder... Diana (The Frig) is still keeping Russ' company solvent in San Diego. Kim (and Scott) are still working with Pepperdine and, as reported above, are setting good examples by putting away a Certificate of Deposit to insure they have money for the reunion, hint, hint, hint.

Cara is still working for a company that may or may not be called something like Deluxe. I saw her at one of the string of summer weddings and am getting so senile I apologize for forgetting. Jan is in New York New York and trying to decide between Law School and a Ph.D. Stephanie is still working in television and is planning to marry Kevin Hawkinson on December 22nd. I met Kevin at Debbie's wedding; explained the prenuptial agreement about our reunion; and gave him my blessing. Karin married Jeff Tuckness and she still works in Admissions here at Pepperdine and has one of those phones that indicates who is calling and answers, to my heart's delight, "Hi dad!" Brad married Margaret this summer and they are in Orange County where Brad is teaching and coaching basketball.

Debby married Tracy Dickson, at least that was reportedly true. Despite having left early to make their wedding we only made the reception. We felt bad, but then the groom nearly didn't make it either. An oil truck and a log truck apparently crashed into each other backing up traffic on the San Deigo Freeway for miles and miles and miles. I said in Heidelberg that Debbie is one of those people I'd want to be with in a natural disaster. I think this "catastrophe" proved she can handle-anything. (And if the wedding was anything like the bride or reception--beautiful!)

Julie is back at Pepperdine as a first year Law School student. Paul married Konni. Paul is working with Alumni and they live in the city where my dad was just elected to City Council (and where Kathy Bristow is also living). Monica had three years experience her-first year of teaching getting jerked around from assignment to assignment because of supposed imbalances in class sizes* So far she has only taught fifth grade this year at Flory School. Scriv is working as an accountant and showed up at my film class one Sunday night this semester (and he wasn't alone). David (and Gayle) are in China but giving some thought to coming back for one year so David can get a Master's degree. Eric is just back from a trip to Korea, but he didn't bring me a baseball glove. I went out and saw Jennifer teach (and somehow she is even better than when she started). Anyone who agrees with me that Eric should work on a Ph.D. in Business should tell him so (no pressure Eric, just encouragement). Todd isn't traveling as much as he did so we haven't seen him lately but he is still with the same company in Kentucky. Tim (Young not Maz) has moved to my home state (Tennessee) and is working for IBM. Carrie (and Andy) are still in Texas, Carrie is teaching Junior High Math, and they are planning to return to California soon.

I hope I didn't miss anyone. I remember I left Maz name off the directory once (or maybe Dane did, it was probably Dane). As for the Gose family, Creedance turned twelve, and Kristy is keeping her in line so seventh grade shouldn't be too traumatic. We are now part owners of a cabin at Pine Mountain (about an hour and forty-five minutes from here) which has become a "totally excellent" retreat from our occasional "island fever" here on campus. Maybe we could have a pre-reunion there to nail down the details of our ten year reunion? We have our Heidelberg family picture on our piano in the front room and think of you all often. We wish you the very best during the Holiday Season and hope the New Year brings you tidings of joy. Our best,
