Letters from Dr. Gose

1989

TO: All Heidelbergers From: Voice of Christmas Goses Past (with apologies to Dickens and Scrooge) Re: To the best of my knowledge Connie and Rick were married in Sacramento (the day before my all day Chairman's Retreat). Sorry I missed the wedding. Perhaps sorrier I missed the single's parties. Janice had great stories about Connie's party. No one is talking about Rick's (and why not Scott Lambert?). Carlos is apparently still making movies. We are currently playing phone tag. Kim Austin is teaching fourth grade at Ambler Elementary at their magnet school. I understand Janille has returned from Europe and is back in Washington. Caroline Bennett is still delaying her entry into teaching and is working for Jenny Craig. Jonathan and Camille will marry in May. Meanwhile Jonathan is in the process of applying to Law Schools (and avoiding me needlessly since I told him to work on a Ph.D. in Business. Just because I have always been willing to give uninvited advice to Heidelbergers doesn't mean I thought anyone would ever heed it.) Shannon dropped by the other day. Introduced me to her "new" boy friend-that's the exact word she used, "new." Fortunately he and I both laughed reassured that Shannon is still Shannon. She is working with Civil Service in Long Beach. Midori is still working with ATandT and is also working on her MBA with Pepperdine. Kathy Bristow is still working in Century City in personnel, but is also applying to graduate schools in International Studies (and asked me to write recommendations, but not to write about Shelly Winters, pinko tendencies, or tell any stories like Russ and Shayne's) . We saw Kim Cabe at Kevin' s wedding (I'll mention that when I come to his letter in the alphabet). She is still working with Campus Crusade at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (and working on getting off at a non standard time for our ten year reunion). Tanja is at UCSB working on her doctorate in Economics. She worked in my division this summer as a true factotum. I actually found Scott Carlson by phone. He is working in Special Education in Sacramento. Zoila is reputedly still working for a television station in L.A. Last report has Becky and Russ doing very well (Diana reported this). We are anxious that they are since we are still depending upon them to take at least most of us to Hedielberg in their private jet for the ten year reunion. Char is still up in the city where Creedance was born, Redwood City, California, but is no longer with Red Cross, and is about to go back to school in Nursing. Michaelann married Curtis Martin over the Thanksgiving Vacation (and gorgeous as she has always been, has never looked more radiant). She is teaching elementary school at a Parish School. Rumor has it that Shayne is still at Pepperdine's Law School. I understand Carolyn will finish her M.A. thesis in June and then will move from U.T. Austin to another school for her doctorate.

Did Jeff Gillett go to Law School? I think he is still in San Luis Obispo. No word on Tom Goolsby lately. Still in Nevada? It's my turn in the alphabet. I recently sent out a letter about what I've been up to so I won't be redundant. Janice thinks the coming down of the Berlin Wall is the most exciting world event in her life time. The pseudo-Heidelbergers who are there now were on their Berlin field trip at the time. The big news for Creedance is that she started Middle School and KRISTY PAUL IS ONE OF HER TEACHERS. Kristy reports that none of the kids in that class will mess with her because if they even start up Creedance turns around and threatens them. Is Brett working with his father in Irvine? Danielle and John were also down for Kevin' s wedding. Danielle is student teaching in an elementary school. Christina is also teaching, preschool. Kevin married Michelle last month in Santa Barbara. Michelle agreed to the prenuptial arrangements that assure us all that Kevin will be at our ten year reunion (and that she is welcome as well). Don't forget those contracts up front of your respective marriage ceremonies. It's only a little over six years away now. Mark Harris is still working in Real Estate. He was at Kevin's wedding, but in actuality he really thought he was going to Michaelann's wedding the next week. I'm still crushed that Erin was on campus, but I wasn't in my office and she didn't come by the house. Whenever you are in the area, please come by or at least call. My administrative assistant and secretary are under standing orders that closed door meetings are not to be interrupted under any circumstances other than a visit from Heidelbergers. But, back to Erin, she is still working at the Moorehaus and everyone should make a special point to write her because she is so marvelous (and because we want to make sure she is reminding Herbert on a regular basis about our pending visit in 1996. (Although by that time I expect Erin will be a professor at Pepperdine and maybe the resident faculty member that year?)

Cindy is back from The Netherlands and teaching Special Education at McGranger Elementary School is the San Diego area. I am told Audrey has had a recent promotion to underwriter with her Insurance Firm. Last I heard Sarah was in Ireland. I saw Brian just before he left for Ecuador with the Peace Corps. I am sure he would appreciate all letters and cards. I haven't even heard a rumor about Jeanne. I haven't seen Dane lately, although I am confident he was at Carlos' latest party. I'm told he is working with computers in Moorpark. Patrick is due back from his trip around the world tomorrow. Janet is back in Germany working with the Share Program in Nuremberg. Kelley (and Dave) are in Moorpark and Kelley is about to finish her degree in Accounting. Dena is still managing a Photography Shop. Tim Maz is still in the management "fast track" at Clark American. (I've already disclaimed the notion anyone should follow my advice but I hope Tim will give some thought to bulding up a nest egg, going back for a Ph.D. in Business and becoming a professor. If anyone agrees with me, pass it on to Tim with the same general feeling that he need not pay any more attention to us than he did in Heidelberg…

I haven't heard anything about Paige in awhile. Every time I hear about Steve he has just gotten another promotion (but he has to live in New Jersey so who knows if he earned it or eveyone else in the company moved). Kristy not only has the distinction of having been my self described "favorite student" she is the only one of my former students who has taught my daughter. What a distinction huh? And by the way Kristy are those marriage rumors founded? Not only has non one seen nor heard from or about Jon Rankin there is now some epistemelogical debate on whether there ever was such a person in Heidelberg. Kowanda and Ron are about to move to Oregon to promotions with State Farm. Don continues in Med School. Kimberley promptly returned her prenuptial agreement. It will be great to have a doctor with us when all your aging bodies return to Heidelberg, zombie drinks, and killer stairs. Diana assures us that Russ and Becky are treating her well as an employee, and if they don't she will embezzle enough money to come to the reunion.

As I type this Kim Lambert and Scott are on their way to Europe for a week in each of the YIE facilities. Envy, jealousy. Kim is the on campus director of YIE further assurance of the 10 Year Reunion although I hope she and Scott will both be working with my dream of a Lab School, College Prep High School run through Pepperdine.

Jeff Scriv is working as an Accountant with a big firm in L.A. Cara was another one I saw at Kevin's wedding. My strongest piece of advice that you all really should follow is don't get into a car with Cara--she has been in something like six car accidents over the past months. Still is doing well though and looks great and is working succssfully in the business world while wondering what next to do with her life. Jan Strand dropped by a few weeks ago. Like Kathy Bristow she is applying to a number of programs in International Studies and Law Schools as well. (Another future professor?) Periodically someone who has passed through Idaho tell me they have seen Stephanie on TV as a reporter/comentator. I am not surprised by how well she is doing, but I am that people actually travel through Idaho. Karin answers my line over in our Admissions Office, "Hi, dad," which makes my day each time I call. Brad is also close at hand and is in the process of becoming a high school teacher and basketball coach. Ask him about his potrayal of a famous Irish poet. Debbie Thomas is teaching in San Diego and reports that she is engaged to be married in August. Congrats! I have heard Julie Trimble is "looking for something else" whatever that means it is the best rumor I could get ahold of. Paul Tyler is engaged to Connie and worked here in Admissions for awhile. Monica is rooming with Kristy and had a perfect job teaching kindergarten which after three weeks her school district took away from her to make her teach a much larger sixth grade class no one else would teach. Oh, it's great so many of you are teaching, but I get so distressed knowing how our schools treat our beginning teachers. So it gose. Carrie and Andy moved to Texas for Andy studies. Carrie is teaching Math there.

I finally caught up to David just a few days before his marriage to Gayle. He is working on the fishing boat with his Dad and making plans to return to China (also to teach) . Eric and Jennifer had the Goses over to dinner recently. Eric is with ATandT (encourage him to take me to a Dodger game next season with his company tickets). Jennifer is teaching in Westlake and gratefully is back at it after physical complications stemming from a traffic accident. (More unsolicited advice: ok, when Janice and I were in our twenties we, too, drove a zippy little import that was efficient and economical and fun, but I'd rather you did as I say than what I did--for less money up front you could all qualify and lease a SAAB, Volvo, or Mercedes, which are real insurance, insurance that minimizes your need to be reimbursed for physical injuries. Janice and Creedance were hit twice by drivers not paying attention. Thank God, and Mercedes, for no injuries.) Todd must be moving up in his company because he isn't travelling as much so we don't seem him as often due to his work with Hawley. Tim Young is working as an Account Executive with Dictaphone, thought about going to Kansas (where at least they have a great major league baseball field) and can probably be described by his own term, "looking. 11 I hope I didn't miss anyone. I still have the habit of counting, but then we nearly left Debbie on the Romantic Road anyway. We wish the very best for you in this Holiday Season and for the coming New Year. If there is any thing we can do for you, any encouraging word we can offer, please let us know. All our years are better because of you all. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The Goses
