The Spiritus Award

The Spiritus Award recognizes outstanding writing in the field of Theology and Film. The Award is unrelated to, but inspired by the Humanitas Awards which were created to recognize movie and television writers whose scripts demonstrate “those values which most enrich the human person.” The Spiritus Awards recognize critical writing that calls attention to the existence of such values in film, as well as adding a specific concern for writing that calls attention to the transcendent, to the sacred.

Robert K. Johnston is the recipient of the 2002 Spiritus Award for his book, Reel Spirituality, and its ground breaking work in defining the emerging field of “Theology and Film.” It has been rightly said about Robert Johnston that he “has written the most comprehensive survey currently available on theology and film,” and that he “guides readers in seeing and understanding film from spiritual perspectives. He is most deserving of this inaugural, 2002, Spiritus Award.
