MUSCLES OF THE KNEE

QUADRICEPS

Rectus femoris

Proximal attachment: Straight head from anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS). Reflected head from groove above rim of acetabulum.

Vastus lateralis

Proximal attachment: Intertrochanteric line, anterior and inferior borders of greater trochanter, lateral lip of gluteal tuberosity and proximal one-half of lateral lip of linea aspera.

Vastus intermedius

Proximal attachment: Anterior and lateral surfaces of proximal two-thirds of body of femur and distal one-half of lateral lip of the linea aspera.

Vastus medialis

Proximal attachment: Medial lip of linea aspera and the medial supracondylar ridge.

Common Distal attachment: Proximal border of patella and through patellar ligament to tuberosity of tibia.

Action: Extend the knee joint. The Rectus Femoris flexes the hip joint.

Nerve: Femoral.

HAMSTRINGS

BICEPS FEMORIS

Proximal attachment of long head: Ischial tuberosity common with the Semitendinosus attachment.

Proximal attachment of short head: Lateral lip of linea aspera.

Distal attachment: Lateral side of head of fibula and lateral condyle of tibia.

Action: The long and short heads of the Biceps Femoris flex and laterally rotate the knee joint. In addition, the long head extends and assists in lateral rotation of the hip joint.

Nerve to long head: Sciatic (Tibial).

Nerve to short head: Sciatic (Peroneal).

SEMITENDINOSUS

Proximal attachment: Ischial tuberosity common with long head of Biceps Femoris.

Distal attachment: Proximal part of anterior, medial surface of body of tibia. Part of the pes anserine group, medial to the gracilis attachment.

Action: Flexes and medially rotates the knee joint. Extends and assists in medial rotation of the hip joint.

Nerve: Sciatic (Tibial).

SEMIMEMBRANOSUS

Proximal attachment: Tuberosity of ischium.

Distal attachment: Posteromedial aspect of medial condyle of tibia.

Action: Flexes and medially rotates the knee joint. Extends and assists in medial rotation of the hip joint.

Nerve: Sciatic (Tibial).

OTHER MUSCLES

SARTORIUS

Proximal attachment: Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and superior half of notch just distal to ASIS.

Distal attachment: Proximal part of anterior, medial surface of tibia near anterior border. Part of the pes anserine group, lateral to the gracilis attachment.

Action: Flexes, laterally rotates, and abducts the hip joint. Flexes and assists in medial rotation of the knee joint.

Nerve: Femoral.

POPLITEUS

Proximal attachment: Posterior and lateral aspect of the lateral condyle of femur.

Distal attachment: Triangular area on the proximal posteromedial aspect of the tibia.

Action: The Popliteus medially rotates the tibia on the femur and flexes the knee joint. This muscle helps to reinforce the posterior ligaments of the knee joint.

Nerve: Tibial.
