MATH DAY 2011
The fifth annual Pepperdine Math Day was held on Saturday, October 29, on the campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu. The primary purposes of this annual event are to promote interest and reward excellence in mathematics and science, as well as to increase the interaction between Pepperdine and our local Southern California high school faculty and students. Approximately 225 students and accompanying faculty and parents from 15 Southern California schools were in attendance.

               

               

This year we were priviledged to have as our guest speaker Dr. Anita Sengupta, an aerospace engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. She spoke to us about some of her work on the entry descent and landing on Mars of the Rover "Curiosity," designed and built at JPL.

       

The other main event of the day was a competitive written math exam.

       

       

On the exam, the overall average score was 24.9 out of 45 (no penalty for incorrect answers). A breakdown of results on the exam is here or a sorted (by percentage correct) version is here. Also, a grade by grade breakdown of the scores is as follows:

A number of prizes were awarded, including a total of $15,000 in scholarship money to Pepperdine, as well as approximately $3000 worth of mathematical computer software and calculators donated by our sponsors, whom we thank for their generous support this and every year.
