Origin:
Volans the flying fish was composed by Johann Bayer in 1603 and seen first in his star atlas Uranometria with the name Pisces Volans.  The flying fish were first identified by Dutch navigator P.D. Keyser as accompanying the ship Argo Navis, the oldest and biggest constellation in the southern sky in ancient times and also the ship that carried Jason and Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece, which had not yet been dismembered into smaller constellations by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille.

Information:
Volans is a southern constellation visible only to observers south of 30° S lat. For southern observers, Volans will be highest in the sky around 9 pm early in March. This diminutive constellation can be found in the vicinity of the Large Magellanic Cloud and east of the "false cross" of Carina the Keel.
