Sculptor

Sculptoris

Sky Chart and Artist Rendering of Sculptor

Origin:
One of the 14 constellations in the southern sky, introduced by the French astronomer, Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1754.  The obscure constellation is in a barren portion of the sky with only 6 stars brighter than 5th magnitude.  It is not clear how the sculptor can be drawn in this group of stars.

Information:
Located directly south of Cetus the Whale and north of Phoenix, Sculptor's main claim to fame is that it is home to the south galactic pole. By looking into Sculptor we are looking into deep intergalactic space directly perpendicular to the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy. Sculptor contains a few galaxies but little else.
