Corona Australis,
the Southern Crown

CrA

Coronae Australis

Sky Chart and Artist Rendering of Corona Australis

Origin:
One of the constellations described by Ptolemy in the Almagest (A.D. 140).  Its alternate name is Corona Austrinus. It has always been associated with a crown or laurel wreath in western mythology.  The Chinese drew the constellation as a tortoise from its oval shape.

Information:
The southern crown is a small constellation just below the teapot of Sagittarius.  The constellation culminates at 9 pm September 1.  With part of the Milky Way running through the constellation, many deep-sky wonders are visible including nebulae (including a dark nebula), clusters, and a number of double stars.  Unfortunately, for most observers north of 20° N lat. the constellation is usually lost in the glow of the horizon.
